SET IN ORDER: GOD'S DESIGN FOR HIS CHURCH

A 5-Day Bible Reading Plan and Devotional Guide

Based on 1 Timothy 3:8-13 — The Standard for Servants

Day 1: Character Before Competence Reading: 1 Timothy 3:8; Luke 16:10; Proverbs 20:6-7

Devotional: The world asks what a man can do. God asks who a man is. Paul opens his description of the servant with character, not capability. Faithfulness in small, unseen things is the foundation of trustworthy ministry. Before you are ever given keys to something significant, God watches how you handle what is ordinary. Your speech, your appetites, your relationship with money — these reveal the real you. Ask yourself honestly today: if the people closest to you were asked to describe your character, would their answer match your own? Character is not what you perform. It is who you are.

Day 2: Conviction That Costs Something Reading: 1 Timothy 3:9; James 1:22-25; Romans 12:1-2

Devotional: Paul calls deacons to hold the faith with a clear conscience, meaning what a man believes and how he behaves must agree. It is possible to know the right answers and still live a divided life. Truth held only in the mind but not carried into daily decisions is not genuine conviction — it is information. The kitchen of your life, the places no one else sees, must match what you present to the world. Today, identify one area where your stated beliefs and your daily habits are not yet aligned. Genuine conviction is not truth you can explain. It is truth you are willing to live.

Day 3: The Office Follows the Towel Reading: 1 Timothy 3:10-11; Mark 10:42-45; John 13:3-5, 12-15

Devotional: Paul's instruction is clear: test first, then recognize. The office does not create the servant. The office recognizes the servant. Jesus Himself modeled this principle. He did not wait for a platform to demonstrate servanthood — He picked up a towel. The Son of Man, who deserved to be served above all, served. Faithful service that goes unnoticed, unrewarded, and unannounced is still seen by Christ. If you are waiting for a title before you begin serving, you have misunderstood the gospel. Today, look for one practical, quiet act of service you can offer without expectation of recognition or applause.

Day 4: Christianity Follows You Home Reading: 1 Timothy 3:12; Deuteronomy 6:6-7; Ephesians 5:25-6:4

Devotional: Paul's requirement that a servant manage his household well is not a minor footnote. It is a defining standard. The home is where Christianity is tested most honestly. Your family hears how you speak when you are frustrated. They see how you handle money, conflict, and disappointment. They know whether your faith is a Sunday performance or a daily reality. God is not looking for church character. He is looking for Christian character — the kind that follows you home and remains consistent behind closed doors. Today, ask yourself the harder question: not how you serve at church, but how you serve at home.

Day 5: Faithful Service Is Never Wasted Reading: 1 Timothy 3:13; Hebrews 6:10-12; Colossians 3:23-24

Devotional: Paul closes with a promise, not of money, power, or public recognition, but of something far more durable — a good standing and great confidence in Christ. God does not overlook faithful service rendered in obscurity. The widow visited, the need quietly met, the unity quietly protected — none of it escapes His notice. Hebrews reminds us that God is not unjust to overlook the work and love shown in His name. If your motivation is the applause of people, ministry will eventually disappoint you. But if your motivation is Christ, no act of faithful service is ever wasted. Serve for an audience of One.
