5-Day Devotional: Treasuring God Above All Else

Day 1: The Beauty of His Dwelling Place

Reading: Psalm 84:1-4

Devotional:

"How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD of hosts!" These opening words capture a heart captivated by God's presence. The Sons of Korah didn't view time with God as an obligation to check off—they treasured it as their greatest prize. Like a child who has every toy imaginable yet still longs for their father's presence, we are called to desire God Himself above all His blessings.

Today, examine your relationship with God. Do you find yourself merely satisfied with His blessings, or are you truly satisfied in His presence? The greatest joy isn't found in what God gives, but in who God is. As John Piper reminds us, "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him."

Reflection: Schedule uninterrupted time with God today—not out of duty, but out of desire. Let your soul sing for joy to the living God.

Day 2: Strength for the Valley

Reading: Psalm 84:5-7; Isaiah 40:28-31

Devotional:

Life's valleys are real. The "Valley of Baca"—a place of weeping—represents those seasons of weakness and hardship we all experience. Yet notice the beautiful transformation: those who trust God "make it a place of springs." God doesn't always remove the valley, but He meets us there with sufficient grace.

Perhaps you're in a valley right now, unable to see the path ahead. God isn't giving you strength for the entire journey at once—He's supplying exactly what you need today. His power is perfected in your weakness. As Charles Spurgeon said, "You may sooner drain the sea of its water than deprive yourself of one drop of His mercy."

Reflection: What valley are you walking through? Ask God to transform your place of weeping into a spring of His grace. Trust His daily provision.

Day 3: One Day in His Courts

Reading: Psalm 84:8-10; Philippians 3:7-11

Devotional:

"A day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere." This isn't religious exaggeration—it's the confession of someone who has tasted true satisfaction. The Sons of Korah would rather be doorkeepers in God's house than dwell in the tents of wickedness with honor and comfort.

What captures your heart's deepest affection? A thousand of earth's greatest days—filled with health, wealth, success, and pleasure—cannot compare to one day in God's presence. Paul echoed this when he wrote, "I consider everything to be a loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord."

The question isn't whether you admire God from a distance, but whether you're pressing in close, prioritizing His presence above all worldly pursuits.

Reflection: Evaluate your priorities. What are you truly treasuring? Choose one earthly pursuit to surrender today in exchange for deeper intimacy with God.

Day 4: No Good Thing Withheld

Reading: Psalm 84:11-12; James 1:16-18

Devotional:

God is both sun and shield—He guides and guards. He bestows favor and withholds no good thing from those who walk uprightly. This promise requires faith, especially when life doesn't unfold as we hoped. God's "good things" may look different from our wishlist, but His goodness is perfect and trustworthy.

A refuge is only useful when you run to it, when you're inside its protective walls. God's goodness isn't meant to be admired from a safe distance—it's meant to be lived in, trusted fully, even when circumstances confuse us. As H.B. Charles Jr. said, "Faith is trusting the character of God when you cannot understand the circumstances of life."

Every good and perfect gift comes from above. Will you trust His definition of "good" today?

Reflection: What circumstance challenges your trust in God's goodness? Intentionally "run to the refuge"—bring that situation to Him in prayer, resting in His character.

Day 5: Blessed Is the One Who Trusts

Reading: Psalm 84 (entire chapter); Psalm 34:8-10

Devotional:

"Blessed is the one who trusts in you!" This psalm begins and ends with blessing—not the blessing of worldly success, but the blessing of knowing God intimately. Those who treasure His presence, trust His provision, thirst for His favor, and take refuge in His goodness discover life's greatest treasure: God Himself.

The altar of your heart is where recalibration happens. In the noise and chaos of this world, have you lost your rhythm with God? Or perhaps you've never begun the journey—you've admired God from a distance but never surrendered your life to Him. Today is your moment. The greatest gift God offers isn't money, fame, or comfort—it's Himself.

"Taste and see that the LORD is good." Don't miss Him while chasing lesser things.

Reflection: Make a declaration today: "I will treasure God above all else." Write down three specific ways you'll pursue His presence this week. If you've never surrendered to Christ, today is your day of salvation.

Closing Prayer:

Lord of hosts, awaken in us a holy longing for Your presence. May we treasure You above all earthly things, trust Your provision in every valley, thirst for Your favor above worldly success, and take refuge in Your unfailing goodness. You are our sun and shield, our strength and song. Help us to find our greatest satisfaction in You alone. In Jesus' name, Amen.
